Two bodies found in river within 24 hours

A man and a woman have drowned on the same stretch of river in the space of 24 hours.

A man’s body was taken from the river Nore in Kilkenny city at about lunchtime on Sunday.

A search was launched after the 22-year-old man was seen entering the river at John’s Bridge in the city at 1.40am.

A diver recovered the man’s body close to the bridge at about 1pm on Sunday.

In a separate incident, a woman’s body was discovered floating in the river at Canal Walk. The body was spotted by a passerby at about 8am yesterday, less than half a mile from the previous day’s incident. Gardaí in Kilkenny said there are no suspicious circumstances about either drowning.

Former staff set to reopen resort

The Quality Resort Killarney, the town’s biggest hotel complex, is set to reopen two months after it closed in January with the loss of 50 jobs.

The hotel’s former general manager Patrick Dillon and its former financial controller Paul O’Shea have taken out a 25-year-lease on the main hotel property from owners Hepton Developments.

The Quality Resort (formerly the Killarney Ryan Hotel) which had been run by Caravanna Properties for five years, went into liquidation with debts of over €6 million in mid-January.

Recognition for ex-teacher

A former secondary-school teacher who has become an honorary fellow at the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) has been praised for her work in helping the development of young people.

Beatrice Barry-Murphy, who was a teacher at the CBS post-primary school in New Ross, Co Wexford for 30 years, initiated social, personal and health education (SPHE) at the school to promote the health and wellbeing of students.

Ms Barry-Murphy later worked on delivering a drug abuse prevention programme and trained teachers in delivering the SPHE curriculum.

Approval for city development

A new supermarket development set to create 130 jobs in Waterford has been granted planning permission by An Bord Pleanála.

The Tesco store will anchor the neighbourhood centre development at Kilbarry on the outskirts of Waterford city.

It will also include a number of smaller shops, a credit union, a creche and a medical centre.
