Teen girl held over Tallaght shooting
Gardaí investigating the fatal shooting of Séamus O'Byrne on March 13th have arrested a fourth person.
A 16-year-old female was arrested yesterday in Tallaght and is being held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Terenure Garda station.
Three others, detained at Tallaght and Rathfarnham, remain in custody.
Nurses in favour of industrial action
Nurses have voted overwhelmingly to support a mass day of industrial action later this month, writes Eithne Donnellan.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has proposed the one-day stoppage for March 30th in organisations which have not met the terms of the national pay agreement signed last autumn or agreed an alternative arrangement.
The Irish Nurses Organisation announced yesterday that 76 per cent of its members voted to support the Ictu campaign.
While their ballot gives sanction to various forms of industrial action, including work to rule, the placing of pickets and short workplace stoppages, it will be up to the executive council of the INO to now decide the exact nature of the action to be taken on the date in question.
The HSE said any threat of industrial action in the health service was unwelcome and the cause of unnecessary concern and worry to those who avail of both community and hospital services.
Latvian-owned ship held in Cork
Customs officers last night arrested a Latvian-owned ship docked in Cork on foot of a High Court order granted to the International Transport Federation after its crew claimed that they have not been paid for a number of months, writes Barry Roche.
Customs officers boarded the MV Defender at Horgan’s Quay on foot of the order by the admiralty section of the High Court after the ITF obtained the order against the owners. ITF inspector Ken Fleming said the crew of seven Ukrainians and two Russians had received no pay since they began working on the vessel and were owed almost $100,000.
The ship, which arrived in Cork on March 3rd with a cargo of timber, is owned by Forestry Shipping in Latvia and was the subject of a similar dispute last April.
Fiona Corcoran of the Greater Chernobyl Cause was organising an emergency food collection for the crew. Ms Corcoran visited the ship with the Ukrainian consul.
George Best items up for auction
Shirts, trophies, framed photographs and a silver Benfica letter opener given to George Best after Manchester United’s 5-1 European Cup defeat of Benfica in Lisbon in March 1966 are among items for sale in an auction of memorabilia owned by the father of the late football legend this week.
Some 110 lots will go under the hammer at Wilson’s Auctions in Mallusk, north Belfast, on Thursday. They can be viewed today and tomorrow.
Dickie Best, who died last year, collected the items over 40 years.
Motorbike crash victim named
Gardaí have named the victim of a crash near Nenagh, Co Tipperary, last Sunday as Raymond Kennedy (28), Carrig, Birr, Co Offaly.
They are investigating the collision of his motorbike with a car at about 3.15pm on the N7.
Three held after robbery attempt
Three men were arrested after an attempted robbery at the Hazel Hotel, Monasterevin, Co Kildare, early yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am, gardaí went to the scene after being alerted, and saw a dark car being driven at speed towards Dublin.
The three men, aged 18, 20 and 35 years, were arrested at Clogheen, Monasterevin, and detained at Kildare and Newbridge Garda stations.
