Flights link Dublin with Scandinavia
A Scandinavian airline has been praised for “bucking” a downward trend in Irish tourism by starting new routes from Norway and Denmark to Dublin.
Tourism Ireland, which promotes the country abroad, said the decision by the airline, Norwegian, to schedule three weekly services from both Oslo and Copenhagen to Dublin was a most welcome development.
“This is very positive news for the tourism industry on the island of Ireland,” a spokeswoman said.
“It’s bucking a trend at a time when a number of airlines are reducing their capacity . . . It’s great news for inbound tourism as it further opens up markets from Sweden, Denmark and Norway.”
Funeral of Sligo baby takes place
The funeral has taken place in Sligo of the seven- week-old baby girl who died of apparent head injuries last Tuesday.
She had been brought to the hospital unconscious by her parents and was put on a life-support machine.
The girl’s father reported having found her on the floor of their home, apparently after falling from her Moses basket.
A postmortem examination has proved inconclusive and the State Pathologist’s office is carrying out further tests to establish the precise cause of death. Gardaí said their own investigation into the incident is also continuing.
Man and daughter rescued from sea
An eight-year-old girl and her father were rescued from the sea yesterday after they got into difficulties while kayaking. Rescuers in the Lough Swilly RNLI lifeboat in Donegal said the pair were lucky they were spotted very quickly or they might have succumbed to hypothermia.
The girl and her father in one kayak and her uncle in another were swept out to sea off Portsalon on Fanad peninsula, and their kayaks overturned in strong wind.
One man made it to shore to raise the alarm and Malin Head Coast Guard station alerted the Lough Swilly boat.
The girl and both adults, who were visiting the area, were treated by medics on shore and then taken to Letterkenny hospital for routine checks.
