Man jailed for murder of teenagers
A man has been jailed for life after a judge convicted him of the double murder of two friends nine years ago.
Convicting Steven Brown (28) of murdering Andrew Robb (19) and David McIlwaine (18), Belfast Crown Court judge Mr Justice Gillen warned him he faced being put behind bars for the rest of his natural life as a result of the “heinous” murders.
There were emotional scenes in court as the judge told Brown that, given the evidence against him, he had no doubt he was guilty of killing the teenage friends on February 19th, 2000.
Man dies in traffic collision
An 18-year-old man died in Sligo General Hospital yesterday following a road traffic collision near Ballymote, Co Sligo, on Monday morning. He has been named as Jonathan Bruen from Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon.
The two people killed in separate road crashes in Co Kilkenny on Monday morning have been named.
Patrick McDonagh (16), of Johnswell Road, Kilkenny, died when the car in which he was a passenger hit a tree. Nora Essan (30), of Waterford city, was killed after her car collided with a truck.

IHRC backs Ombudsman
The Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has backed Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly’s call for the remit of her office to be extended to cover the asylum and naturalisation process, writes Mary Minihan.
President of the IHRC Dr Maurice Manning said he was convinced of the need for an “independent mechanism” to oversee the process.
Man denies burglary charge
An Athlone man denied taking part in an aggravated burglary at the home of a prominent Westmeath businessman at Mullingar Circuit Court sitting in Tullamore, Co Offaly, yesterday.
Brian McGinley (37), Athlone, Co Westmeath, denied being part of a gang who entered the home of Damien Kilmartin and tied up family members before escaping with a safe containing jewellery worth €102,000 in 2005. The trial continues today.
Customs seize cash at airport
The Customs Service has secured a three-month order to detain a large consignment of cash, suspected of being the proceeds of criminal activity. Customs officers recovered €100,000 at Shannon airport last Saturday when they searched the hand luggage of a 46-year-old Irishman due to board a flight to Britain.

Shot fired at Dublin house
A shot was fired at a house in Clondalkin, Dublin last night. Gardaí were called to the scene at St John’s Drive shortly before 8pm. No one was hurt in the incident.
