Custom House staff dispute ends

The trade union Siptu has said that 10 contract cleaning staff who have been working at the Custom House in Dublin are to retain their jobs and current income levels following a month-long dispute, writes Martin Wall.

The union said the women cleaners were informed in late May that they would not be re-employed when the Department of the Environment awarded the cleaning contract for its headquarters to a new company, Schorman Ltd.

Siptu said yesterday that as part of a settlement, it had been agreed that another company, G4S, would take over the Custom House cleaning contract and the Siptu members would preserve the terms and conditions they previously enjoyed.

Second arson attack on school

A north Belfast primary school has been targeted by arsonists for the second time in a month. About £10,000 in damage was caused to the Star of the Sea primary school after petrol bombs were thrown into the canteen. Paint was also thrown at outside walls.

The building was attacked two weeks ago as a spate of arson attacks was carried out in various parts of the city.

Whitehouse primary school in nearby Newtownabbey was destroyed in an attack and alternative accommodation has been located for the new term in September.

Star of the Sea’s principal Ciarán McGarry said his pupils were the real losers as the money needed to repair the damage would come from the education budget.

Defence Forces to take in cadets

Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea has secured permission for an intake of Defence Forces cadets this year despite the moratorium on public sector recruitment, which includes the Defence Forces.
Plans will proceed immediately for an intake of 30 Army and 12 Naval cadetships. Cadets are trainee officers.

The decision to take in the 32 new personnel follows talks between Mr O’Dea and Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan.

Cadet recruitment had been suspended along with all other recruitment to the Defence Forces. The decision on the cadets has no bearing on the moratorium relating to other ranks.
