Two men jailed over heroin possession
Two Dublin men who were caught by gardaí trying to retrieve heroin from a stash have been jailed for 12 years for possessing over €43,000 worth of the drug for sale or supply, writes Barry Roche.
Aidan Finnegan (28), Onger, Clonee, Co Meath, and Farranferris Green, Farranree in Cork, and Alan Morrison (29) Coultry Road, Ballymun, Dublin, had both denied possessing the drugs at Brooklodge, Glanmire, Co Cork, on September 5th, 2008.
During the trial, gardaí testified that they saw Finnegan and Morrison going to a bag concealed at undergrowth and taking something out and then putting it back again.
Morrison and Finnegan said they went nowhere near the bag and said they only went into the woodland to urinate.
Man arrested over Galway murder
Gardaí investigating the murder of a young north Galway man arrested a man yesterday in Dublin.
It is understood that officers from Galway Garda station in Mill Street were acting on intelligence, less than a week after a €10,000 reward was offered, in association with the Irish Crimestoppers Trust, for information on the crime.
The man was apprehended yesterday evening in Dublin, and taken initially to Pearse Street station. He was transferred to Galway last night for questioning.
Kieran Cunningham had been out with friends and had left a nightclub before 2am.
Cyclist drowned in Galway stream
An elderly cyclist drowned yesterday after he fell into a stream in Co Galway.
Gardaí believe the pensioner was on his bike at Screeb near Rossmuck in Connemara when he slipped into the shallow water.
His body was spotted at 12.15pm.
Gardaí at Salthill are investigating the incident. A postmortem will be carried out to determine an exact cause of death.
Two charged after violent Tralee feud
Two men were brought before a special sitting of Killorglin District Court in Co Kerry yesterday on charges relating to Sunday’s outbreak of violence in Tralee.
Robert Coffey (30), Woodview Park, Killeen, Tralee was charged with having a slash hook at Kerry General Hospital on Sunday.
Batty Coffey (27), Cahereen’s West, Castleisland, was charged with having an iron bar also at Kerry General Hospital.
Both men were remanded on bail on personal bonds of €2,000. Judge James O’Connor laid down a number of bail conditions.
New British ambassador
The Cabinet was informed yesterday of the proposed appointment of Julian Beresford King as British ambassador to Ireland, in succession to David Reddaway.
The new appointee is currently a member of the cabinet of EU trade commissioner Catherine Ashton from Britain, and has previously served in the UK missions in Brussels and at the United Nations.
