Gardai seize €1 million worth of head shop products in Louth

Gardaí are preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions after they seized €1 million worth of so-called head shop products in two planned searches in Co Louth on Saturday, writes ELAINE KEOGH.

A 36-year-old man was arrested and later released without charge. The searches were carried out in Dromiskin, south of Dundalk, and during the second search the arrest was made.

A stun gun was also found during one of the searches. A Garda spokesman said people do not realise the dangers posed by such products, some of which are designed to look harmless.

“These goods would have retailed at €1 million and our investigation is ongoing,” the spokesman added.

Robinson shortlisted for peace award

A shortlist of nominees for the 2010 Tipperary International Peace Award includes former Irish president and UN high commissioner for human rights Mary Robinson, Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and chairwoman of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Sudan Dr Sima Samar.

Tipperary Peace Convention received nominations from organisations and individuals and has now released the final shortlist.

The list will be considered by the peace convention committee over the next couple of weeks and the winner will be announced on New Year's Day.

The shortlist also includes Taiwanese Buddhist nun Cheng Yen, head of the UN Relief and Works Agency in Gaza John Ging and prime minister of Zimbabwe Morgan Tsvangirai.

The award was founded in 1984 with the principal aim of giving recognition to those who promote the ideals of peace and peaceful co-operation in Ireland and across the world.
