Girl aged 12 died of asphyxia due to strangulation, inquest told
A 12-year-old girl whose body was found near the Royal Canal in August had died of asphyxia due to strangulation, an inquest has heard.
The body of Michaela Davis of The Village, Porterstown, Clonsilla, Dublin 15, was found on the bank of the Royal Canal close to her home on August 28th last.
Her father Brendan Davis attended the opening of an inquest into his daughter’s death at Dublin County Coroner’s Court, Tallaght, yesterday. Mr Davis identified the body of his daughter to Garda Brendan O’Hora following her death. A man has been charged in connection with her murder. The inquest was adjourned until the completion of criminal proceedings.
Sides to pay costs in nuclear dispute
The High Court has decided both sides should bear their own costs in a long-running dispute between a group of Louth residents and the Government over a challenge to a British nuclear plant.
In 1994, Constance Shortt, Mary Kavanagh, Mark Dearey and Ollan Herr took an action claiming the Government was negligent in not objecting to the development of the Thorp reprocessing plant on the Sellafield site before 1994.
The plaintiffs sought costs from the State on grounds the proceedings were to advance the public interest. The State did not seek its costs against the plaintiffs.
€600,000 for family over death
The family of a woman who was among three people who died in a road incident has secured €600,000 in settlement of High Court proceedings over her death.
Angela Goodman (44), also known as Angela Woods, a mother of six, died after the car she was travelling in was in a head-on collision with another car at Tullyvaragh, Co Monaghan, on the Carrickmacross to Castleblayney Road, on February 7th, 2004. She was in a car being driven by Michael McGeough (35).
Their car collided with a car driven by Kris Cumiskey (20), who was uninsured. All three died instantly.
Teenager faces trial for under-age sex
A Dublin teenager charged with having under-age sex with a girl was served with a book of evidence yesterday and sent forward for trial before a judge and jury.
The defendant, who is now aged 18, had been charged at the Children’s Court with two counts under the Sexual Offences Act 2006 for having sex with a child under the age of 17, in west Dublin on a date last year.
He was aged 16 at the time of the alleged incidents. The teenager was remanded on bail.
