Oireachtas group investigating Callely expenses to meet today
The Oireachtas committee on members interests investigating expenses claims made by Fianna Fáil Senator Ivor Callely is due to meet later today.
Mr Callely stood down from the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party after it was disclosed he made mileage and subsistence claims from his west Cork holiday home despite having a permanent residence in Clontarf and a constituency office in Killester, Dublin.
Mr Callely said at the time he had been trying to get to grips with the controversy in relation to his expenses which he said arose from the loss of his Dáil seat in 2007.
The committee will examine two complaints from the public.
Taxi driver guilty of raping woman
A taxi driver (28) has been remanded in custody for sentence after he was found guilty yesterday of raping a young woman who was among a group of friends who accepted an invitation to go back to the man’s apartment.
The man was found guilty by an 11-1 verdict following more than three hours of deliberation at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork. He was remanded for sentence on July 19th by Mr Justice Paul Carney.
During the four-day trial, the victim (20) told how in the early hours of July 26th last she and four friends accepted the accused’s offer after failing to find a party to attend.
Bomb made safe at Garda station
A viable explosive device was discovered and made safe at Finglas Garda station in Dublin yesterday. The improvised explosive device (IED) was handed to gardaí by a member of the public. It was in a partially detonated state when received.
Members of the Defence Forces and the Army bomb disposal team were called for assistance. The team arrived to the station at about 1.10pm and made the device safe.
The Army did not carry out a controlled explosion and the scene was declared safe at 2pm.
Gardaí seek missing Kildare teenager
Gardaí have appealed for the public’s help in the search for a missing Kildare teenager.
Ryan Delaney (13) was last seen in the Newbridge area at 8.15pm last Saturday. He is described as being 152cm (5ft) tall, of slim build and with short brown hair and blue eyes.
When last seen he was wearing a blue and white striped hooded top, navy tracksuit bottoms and black Nike runners. Anyone with information is asked to contact Newbridge Garda station on 045-440180 or the confidential line 1800-666111.
