Woman on trial for murder of husband

A woman is on trial at the Central Criminal Court, charged with murdering her husband at their Westmeath home 23 years ago.

Vera McGrath has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Bernard Brian McGrath (43) between March 10th and March 18th, 1987.

Her co-accused, Colin Pinder, Liverpool, England, has also pleaded not guilty to murdering the father of four at Lower Coole, Coole, Co Westmeath.

A jury of four women and eight men has been sworn in to try the case.

The trial will begin on Friday and is expected to last three weeks.

Youth for trial on stun gun charges

A youth accused of attacking two security men with an electronic stun gun has been sent forward for trial. The 17-year-old boy had been charged at the Children’s Court with possessing the weapon and producing it during the course of a dispute in Dublin in February last year.

Judge Catherine Staines made an order sending the case forward for trial.

Garda John Sharkey of Harcourt Terrace station had told the Children’s Court that the teen and two other youths were allegedly involved in a row with two security men who had been guarding a construction site.

Inquest adjourned to query test results

A coroner has adjourned an inquest into the death of a woman in an attempt to establish when a test result which was “very abnormal” was available to be seen by doctors on the hospital computer system, writes Georgina O’Halloran.

Mary Dolan (81), Castleplunkett, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, died at St James’s Hospital on February 20th, 2009 .

Dr Brian Farrell said he would adjourn to July to seek to establish when the tests were done, when the results were available and to identify the procedure in relation to the tests.
