Man charged in Galway as part of organised crime investigation

A man (29) was charged in Galway last night as part of an investigation into organised crime across the west of Ireland.

The man was due to appear before a special sitting of Galway District Court after 9pm last night.

He was one of nine men, in their 20s and 30s, who were arrested on Tuesday under new organised crime laws introduced last year.

Three of these men were released without charge yesterday.

A tenth man was arrested in Galway last evening and is being held in Tuam Garda Station under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The operation involved gardaí from across Galway and a number of Garda specialist units.

Arrest made in hit-and-run case

Gardaí last night arrested a 28-year-old man in relation to a hit-and-run collision on the main Cork-to-Waterford road on the October bank holiday last year in which two men were killed.

Detectives arrested the man, who is originally from Cork city, at his home in the Midleton area shortly before 9pm and brought him to Midleton Garda Station. He is to appear in court today.

Post-mortem in Killarney drowning

A postmortem was carried out yesterday on the body of a 66-year-old Limerick woman recovered from a Killarney lake on Tuesday evening.

The woman was dressed in swimming attire and may have drowned or died from a sudden medical condition.

The alarm was raised at about 5pm by a woman walking near the lakeshore, close to the Dundag beach area near Muckross House.
