Storm Agatha kills 16 in Caribbean
GUATEMALA CITY – The remnants of Tropical Storm Agatha dumped more rain on Guatemala and El Salvador yesterday after killing at least 16 people in the region.
Rescue workers scrambled to restore communications to towns and villages cut off by landslides when Agatha, the first named storm of the 2010 Pacific hurricane season, slammed into the Guatemalan coast near the border with Mexico on Saturday. The storm dissipated overnight but emergency workers warned of heavy rain for several more days. – (Reuters)
British getting less sleep
LONDON – The average British adult sleeps for just six hours and 21 minutes a night – almost an hour less than two years ago, a study revealed.
Money worries, work stress and noise were the top factors blamed for people failing to get the recommended eight hours.
The survey estimates that £1 billion is lost annually in Britain due to sick days taken after a bad night’s sleep. – (PA)
Communal riots in Kosovo town
MITROVICA – Nato peacekeeping troops and police fired tear gas yesterday to separate thousands of ethnic Albanians and local Serbs in the divided Kosovo town of Mitrovica during protests against Serb local elections.
The elections are being held with the backing of the Serbian government in Belgrade. Kosovo, a former province of Serbia with a mainly ethnic Albanian population of two million, declared independence in 2008. – (Reuters)
