Man dies after car crashes over cliff at Mullaghmore, Sligo
A motorist was killed yesterday when his car crashed over a 60ft cliff at Mullaghmore, Co Sligo.
The man believed to be in his 30s was found when the alarm was raised by day-trippers who spotted the NI-registered car.
Among the first at the scene were members of Leitrim Sub Aqua Club from Manorhamilton.
They had been out at sea in a boat on a water exercise when they received an alert at about 4.15pm.
Diving officer Francis Jenkins said there was only one man in the car which had a wrecked bicycle lying alongside.
According to one report the motorist swerved to avoid the bicycle but Mr Jenkins said there was no evidence to support that.
He said the bicycle may have been attached to the car roof and became loose in the fall.
Mr Jenkins also said it was likely the car was several hours at the bottom of the cliff before the alert was raised.
He said: “There’s evidence the tide had been in and went out again. It could be that the car was there for about eight hours.”

A fisherman drowned after getting into difficulties off the south Connemara coast.

“A full scale search was launched and the man was found a short time later but efforts to save him were not successful,” said a Garda spokesperson.
The Aran Islands lifeboat, the Costelloe Bay Coastguard unit, the Shannon based rescue helicopter and local fishing vessels were involved in the incident.
Gardaí say the man’s identity is not being released until his relatives have been informed. His body was taken to University College Hospital in Galway for a postmortem.
