Police arrest 13 in raids on Eta 'youth wing'
MADRID – Spanish police arrested 13 people in a series of dawn raids yesterday on a banned organisation that authorities say is the youth wing of the Basque separatist group Eta, the interior ministry said.
The operation is the latest in a series of mass arrests of suspected supporters of Eta, and comes after a call last month by the armed separatists for a new truce, which the government has rejected.
A statement said 300 police had taken part in the operation in the northern Basque country and Navarre, and had dismantled the Segi organisation. – (Reuters)
Judges replaced in trial of Dutch MP
AMSTERDAM – A Dutch court yesterday approved a request from politician Geert Wilders to have new judges for his trial on charges of inciting hatred against Muslims, forcing the court to start the case all over again.
Mr Wilders’s lawyer had asked the court to replace the judges because of concern about their potential bias after they did not approve a request to take testimony from a witness the defence considers crucial. – (Reuters)
Lohan ordered back to rehab
LOS ANGELES – Actress Lindsay Lohan was ordered to remain in rehab yesterday after failing a random drug test last month while on probation for a 2007 drink driving and cocaine possession offence.
Lohan (24) avoided being sent back to jail in a brief hearing at a Beverly Hills court. – (Reuters)
Body of ferry captain recovered
AMSTERDAM – Divers yesterday recovered the body of the skipper of a Dutch passenger ferry who was killed when his vessel collided with a German freight ship on a busy waterway near Amsterdam, police said. The skipper is believed to be the only victim of the collision. – (AP)
