Mother under arrest after children die
MADRID – A British woman holidaying in Spain is under arrest after her two children died while the family was staying at a four-star hotel in a resort near Gerona, a police spokesman said yesterday. “A suspect has been arrested. She is the mother of the two minors,” the spokesman said.
The children, aged one and five, died while the family was staying at a hotel on the beach at Lloret de Mar. – (Reuters)
Rhino horns and ivory seized
PARIS – Police seized $1 million worth of rhino horns and ivory and shut down an illegal ivory factory in a sweep across southern Africa, international police agency Interpol said yesterday.
The operation, which Interpol co-ordinated earlier this month, included the arrests of 41 people. Authorities in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia carried out raids on markets and shops. – (Reuters)
Costello cancels Israel concerts
JERUSALEM – Elvis Costello has cancelled two concerts he was scheduled to play in Israel in protest at its treatment of Palestinians.
Costello, one of the most gifted British songwriters of his generation, was due to play on June 30th and July 1st but says his “conscience” dictated that he pull out. Leonard Cohen played in Israel last year, despite a campaign from the boycott movement asking him to stay away. – (Guardian service)
No-fishing zone doubled in US
MIAMI – The United States has nearly doubled the no-fishing zone in the Gulf of Mexico because of the spread of oil leaking from the ruptured BP well, a federal official said yesterday.
The no-fishing zone now covers 19 per cent of US waters in the Gulf, said Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. – (Reuters)
