Greek ministers could face fraud charges
ATHENS – Greece’s ruling socialists agreed yesterday to prosecute several former ministers in the previous government for fraud and money laundering in a land swap scandal that helped bring down the conservatives last year.
Dealing with past scandals is key to ensuring public support for tough austerity measures to fight a huge debt crisis that has sent shockwaves throughout the euro zone.
Polls show that most Greeks are more willing to accept austerity measures aimed at pulling their country out of a severe debt crisis if those involved in scandals are brought to justice. – (Reuters)
Pregnant Dion goes to hospital
LOS ANGELES – Pregnant Canadian singer Celine Dion has been hospitalised in Florida as a precaution to prevent the premature birth of her twins, hospital officials said yesterday.
Ms Dion (42) was admitted on the advice of her doctors “to prevent the early delivery of her babies which is the standard of care for any patient with twin pregnancy in this clinical setting,” St Mary’s Medical Centre in West Palm Beach Florida said in a statement. The Florida hospital also denied media reports that claimed Ms Dion had scheduled a caesarean section delivery for October 22nd. – (Reuters)
