Baseball bat attack file on way to DPP
A file is to be sent to the DPP after the armed Garda response unit was called to an incident early on Sunday which involved a man being assaulted with a baseball bat on MacCurtain Street, Cork.
At about 1.30am the man and a friend got involved in an altercation with four men. One of the four ran to a flat and returned with a baseball bat which was used in the attack. When gardaí arrived the men fled to the flat and barricaded themselves inside. The four, aged between 16 and 22, were later arrested, and taken to Mayfield Garda station.
Councillor sorry for offensive remarks
A Labour member of Limerick City Council has apologised after he described parts of west Limerick as the “arsehole of Limerick” and described Co Limerick people as “country bumpkins”.
Gerry McLoughlin, a former Ireland and Munster rugby player, was criticised last week for the comments at a meeting in the city hall to debate a controversial proposal to alter the boundary between Limerick city and county and parts of Clare.
Cllr McLoughlin said he was withdrawing his offending remarks.
Man admits manslaughter of teenager in Limerick
An 18-year-old man accused of murdering a Ukrainian teenager in Limerick two years ago pleaded guilty to his manslaughter yesterday.
Anthony Mason, Bishop Street, Limerick was arraigned at the Central Criminal Court on the charge of murdering Roman Vysochan (16) at the Carraig Midhe estate, Corbally, on May 10th, 2008. Mason pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to the manslaughter of Roman Vysochan, who had been living in Ashley Close, Westbury, Co Clare.
Prosecuting counsel told Mr Justice Paul Carney that the plea was acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Vysochan was stabbed during an altercation on the night of May 10th, 2008. Mason was remanded on continuing bail until January 11th, 2011.
