Inmates with ties to al-Qaeda escape
BAGHDAD – Four prisoners with ties to al-Qaeda have escaped from the US-controlled section of an Iraqi prison near Baghdad airport, officials said yesterday.US military officials said they discovered the four inmates were missing during a security sweep after two other detainees were caught attempting to flee late on Wednesday. – (Reuters)
At least 21 are killed in India bus crash
NEW DELHI – At least 21 people died when a crowded bus veered off the road and plunged into a river in central India, a news agency said.
Press Trust of India yesterday said rescue workers scouring the river pulled 21 bodies overnight from the Bagdi River in Madhya Pradesh state.
India has the highest annual road death toll in the world, according to the World Health Organisation. – (PA)
'Gone with Wind' actor honoured
PARIS – Oscar-winning actor Olivia de Havilland, who starred in Gone With The Wind more than 70 years ago, was awarded the Legion of Honour by French president Nicolas Sarkozy yesterday.
The American actor of British origin played Melanie Wilkes in the film. She has lived in Paris since 1953. – (Reuters)
