Biomass incinerator on shores of Lough Neagh gets approval

Approval has been granted for a controversial biomass incinerator at Glenavy on the shores of Lough Neagh, Co Antrim.

The North’s Environment Minister Edwin Poots gave his go-ahead yesterday despite strong lobbying against the power plant by Co Antrim residents and environmental campaigners.

The proposed plant will generate enough electricity to power 25,000 homes.

It will be provided by Rose Energy which is a joint venture involving three major poultry producers, O’Kane Poultry, Moy Park and Glenfarm Holdings.

The plant will create up to 40 permanent jobs and provide work for up to 4,000 others in the construction sector.

Two Irish held in Spanish drug raid   

Two Irish nationals were among a group of 25 people arrested in Spain yesterday after police seized ecstasy tablets, cocaine and other drugs.

Twenty Britons, including a number of students, were also held during the operation on the island of Ibiza. During the major operation police seized 38,000 ecstasy tablets, 4kg (8.8lb) of cocaine, 250g (8.8oz) of ketamine, 4l (7 pints) of GHB, and 50g (1.8oz) of crystal MDMA. About €56,000 was also recovered as part of Operation Arrow – a joint venture between British police and the Spanish National Guard.
