Cameron baby girl born while family on holiday in Cornwall

LONDON – Samantha Cameron (39), the wife of Britain’s prime minister, has given birth to the couple’s fourth child, a baby girl, while on a family holiday in the southwest of England. David Cameron (43) said yesterday that the birth had come as “a bit of a shock” as the baby had not been expected until September, but it had gone very well.

We’re absolutely thrilled. She is an unbelievably beautiful girl and I’m a very proud dad,” he said yesterday outside the hospital in Truro, in the picturesque region of Cornwall. “Both baby and Mum seem to be doing very well. So, really exciting and I’ve told the other two children who are thrilled, bouncing up and down and dying to say hello to the new baby.”

The couple went into hospital at about 8am yesterday and the baby girl was born by Caesarean section at midday, weighing 6lb 1oz (2.7 kg). “My job was to make the toast and the tea and things like that,” Mr Cameron said.

The couple’s two other children are Nancy (6) and Arthur (4). Their eldest son, Ivan, died in February last year aged six. He had suffered from cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy. – (Reuters)

Manila police admit siege bungle

MANILA – The Philippines has admitted it bungled a hostage siege in which eight tourists were killed and which piled pressure on President Benigno Aquino to pull the country out of years of poor management and decline.

The Philippine National Police said yesterday that the assault team which tried to rescue 15 tourists from Hong Kong who were being held on a bus by a gunman, was inadequately trained, armed and led.

The gunman, a sacked policeman who was angry at being dismissed, was killed by police. Eight of the hostages were killed, either by the gunman or in the siege, and one is in a critical condition. – (Reuters)

George Michael 'could face jail'

LONDON – George Michael admitted yesterdaty he had been under the influence of cannabis when he crashed his car into a north London shop in July.

The judge at the magistrate’s court who heard the 47-year-old star’s guilty plea warned Michael he could face time in jail when he returns to be sentenced on September 14th.

“I make it clear the options in respect of sentence remain open, including the power to imprison,” Robin McPhee told the court.

Mr Michael was banned from driving for two years in 2007 and sentenced to 100 hours of community service after admitting driving when unfit due to drugs. – (Reuters)
