Court reserves judgment in case over alleged feed contamination
The High Court has reserved its decision on whether to approve a scheme of arrangement between a Co Wexford company alleged to have supplied animal feed containing harmful dioxins and those suing it arising out of the contamination.
Millstream Recycling Ltd has asked the court to approve a scheme with more than 25 creditors who have brought actions against the firm over being supplied with contaminated feed. The company claims that it faces going into liquidation if the scheme is not approved.
The contamination, in December 2008, resulted in a recall of all Irish pork products after pig meat on a number of farms was found to have had between 80 and 200 times more dioxins that the recognised safety limit.
Man dies at Swell Season concert
Swell Season, the Oscar-winning Irish act fronted by Glen Hansard, have said they are “shocked and saddened” by the news that a man died during one of their concerts in California this week. The band was performing at the Sartoga Mountain Winery on Thursday when the man appeared to jump to the stage from the roof of a building near a lightening rig.
The group had just finished a song and Hansard was engaging in banter with the audience when the incident happened. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hospital row over alarms resolved
An electricians’ dispute at St James’s Hospital in Dublin was resolved yesterday following intensive discussions.
The row over responsibility for fire alarms reached its height on Monday as electricians employed by the hospital held a one-day strike.
The talks between hospital management and officials at the Technical Engineering and Electrical Uniontook place over two days.
The parties agreed to resolve the impasse “using agreed mechanisms”, they said in a joint statement.
Prison officer injured in Mountjoy
A prison officer at Mountjoy jail in Dublin was treated in hospital yesterday after being attacked by an inmate. The officer was wounded in the face during an incident in the afternoon. He received 16 stitches when treated at the Mater hospital.
It is understood the incident happened in the segregation wing of the prison .
The inmate concerned was yesterday transferred to another prison.
An investigation into the incident was being conducted by the Garda and the Irish Prison Service.
