Gardaí send DPP file on alleged attempt to bribe councillor
Gardaí in Drogheda have sent a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to an allegation that a local councillor was offered a bribe, writes Elaine Keogh.
Earlier this year Cllr Frank Gallagher (57) alleged at a meeting of Drogheda Borough Council that a “consultant” offered him a “fee” if he voted a particular way on a matter due to be debated at a future council meeting.
Mr Gallagher, who last June became the first member of the Socialist Party to be elected to a local authority in Co Louth, subsequently made a detailed statement to a senior garda in Drogheda outlining the details of the alleged incident.
Garda Supt Gerry Smith yesterday confirmed that the file was completed and sent to the DPP last week.
Gardaí examine feud link in blaze
GARDAÍ have begun an investigation into a suspected arson attack at a house in Knocknaheeny on the northside of Cork city, which they believe is linked to a feud in the area.
The house at Killala Gardens in Knocknaheeny sustained extensive damage in the blaze, which broke out at 2am yesterday. The two-storey terraced house was unoccupied at the time.
Garda technical experts have begun a forensic examination in a bid to establish the cause of the blaze.
In a separate incident gardaí are looking for a lone raider who made off with about €1,000 when he held up staff at a shop in Ballyvolane in Cork city over the weekend. The robbery happened at 9.30pm on Saturday.
