Garda investigate Cork knife attack
Gardaí in Cork last night said they were following a definite line of inquiry into a knife attack in which a young man received serious stab wounds to the face and neck in the early hours of yesterday, writes Barry Roche.
Gardaí in Midleton were alerted when the 21-year-old victim managed to make his way to the Garda station shortly after 2am yesterday. The young man had been stabbed a number of times in the face and neck during a row at a laneway off the Mill Road in the town.
The man, who is understood to be originally from the Whitegate area of east Cork, was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent surgery. A HSE spokeswoman described his condition as “stable” last night.
87% back abortion if woman's life at risk
Support for abortion when a pregnancy seriously endangers a woman's life now stands at 87 per cent in the Republic, a new opinion poll has found. The online poll of 1,002 adults by the UK organisation YouGov Plc found 78 per cent agreed that abortion should be permitted if the pregnancy is the result of sexual abuse/rape or incest.
Man killed after car hit wall
A 26-year-old man died in a single vehicle traffic crash in Co Westmeath yesterday morning.
The incident happened sometime between 6am and 7.15am when the man’s car hit a wall on the N52 at Cloghan, Mullingar.
The man was seriously injured and was taken by ambulance to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar where he later died.
Gardaí in Mullingar have appealed to anyone who travelled on the N52, at Cloghan at that time yesterday morning to contact them.

An online survey to gauge opinion on State spending on overseas development aid has been launched by Labour Senator Dominic Hannigan. The survey is part of a wider study the Oireachtas foreign affairs committee member has undertaken on Irish Aid’s work.
