Customs officers at Dublin Port seize cigarettes worth €3.8m
Customs officers have seized cigarettes in Dublin with an estimated street value of €3.8 million.
Some nine million cigarettes were seized at Dublin Port yesterday as part of an ongoing operation targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes.
This brings the total amount of cigarettes seized in Ireland this year to €128.9 million. Some €55 million worth of cigarettes were seized in the first seven months of 2010, a loss to the exchequer of approximately €43 million. Officers examined a container with its contents described as “disposable cups”. The Benson Hedges brand of cigarettes were hidden in the container which arrived from China.
Dublin Zoo gorilla gets London call
The only male gorilla at Dublin Zoo is to travel to London to assist in a breeding project.
Eleven-year-old Kesho has been chosen as one of four possible candidates from around Europe by London Zoo to help with its gorilla population numbers.
The Dubliner was selected for the task mainly because of his steady, calm nature and the fact that he is socially well adapted.
Electricians to picket at hospital
Electricians at St James’s Hospital in Dublin are to place a picket at the entrance this morning.
Some seven members of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union (TEEU) will take part in the four-hour work stoppage in protest at changes in their role.
The electricians will provide emergency cover and no disruption to the patient services is expected, the hospital said in a statement.
