A woman in her late 50s was brought to Letterkenny General Hospital, where her condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Garda Supt Kevin English said additional resources would be requested following the crash in which eight men were killed three weeks ago. Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey had reiterated his commitment to the continued deployment of necessary Garda resources to make roads safer.

Supt English said that a meeting of the Donegal Road Safety Working Group, which includes Garda representatives and members of Donegal County Council, took place last week.

The meeting discussed the recent fatal crash with a view to improving existing road safety strategies in the area.

Any road safety initiatives would be concentrated on young drivers.

“Obviously we have to look at that age group in relation to initiatives and education, Supt English said.

Fifty-six people under the age of 27 have died on Donegal’s roads in the past five years.

Man seeks release from solitary

Leroy Dumbrell, the younger brother of Warren and Jeffrey Dumbrell, who last month were granted a re-hearing of their murder trial, is to ask a High Court judge to release him from solitary confinement in Castlerea Prison.

Leroy(24), of Emmett Road, Inchicore, Dublin, is serving an eight-year term for an assault on Nigel Reid.

Barrister Iseult O'Malley, SC, counsel for Dumbrell, told Mr Justice Michael Peart in the High Court yesterday that Dumbrell had been detained in solitary confinement for the past five months. Ms O'Malley said she would be seeking leave to judicially review the decision of the Castlerea Prison governor to keep Dumbrell in solitary confinement. She told the court she would also be making an application under Article 40 of the Constitution seeking Dumbrell's release from prison on the grounds of his continuing solitary confinement.

Reme Farrell, counsel for the governor, told the judge there was a possibility the issue regarding the judicial review matter may be capable of resolution. With regard to the Article 40 issue, he was seeking a short adjournment for the preparation of an affidavit by the prison governor. The judge adjourned both applications until Friday next.
