Parents pay after youths commit crime
MILAN – The parents of Italian children who commit violent crimes face the threat of crushing financial penalties following a landmark ruling by a judge in Milan.
The parents of five teenage boys who repeatedly raped a young girl over a period of two years have been ordered to pay her compensation totalling €450,000 because of their failure to give their sons an “education in feelings and emotions”. – (Guardian service)
Baptists charged with kidnapping
PORT-AU-PRINCE – Ten US missionaries detained in Haiti were charged yesterday with child kidnapping and criminal association for allegedly trying to take children illegally out of the country.
The missionaries, most from an Idaho-based Baptist church, were arrested last week when they tried to cross the border with a busload of 33 children they said were orphaned by the January 12th earthquake. – (Reuters)
Romania backs US missile shield
BUCHAREST – Romania’s chief defence body has approved a plan by Washington to deploy interceptor missiles as part of a shield to protect Europe, Romanian president Traian Basescu said. A US state department spokesman said the facilities were due to become operational by 2015. – (Reuters)
