Four people arrested over kidnapping of man in Bangor
Four people have been arrested after a man was kidnapped in Bangor. The victim, in his mid-20s, was abducted as he walked out of a hostel in the town’s Central Avenue at about 5pm on Saturday.
He was tied-up and bundled into a dark-coloured, three-door Fiesta car but managed to escape a short time later on the Skipperstown Road.
He received only minor injuries but was said to be shocked by the ordeal. Two men, aged 20 and 21, and two women, also in their 20, were arrested last night in connection with the incident. – (PA)
Man held after Limerick shooting
A man in his 30s was in Garda custody in Limerick last night following a shooting at a house in the city, writes KATHRYN HAYES.
Shots were fired at a house on Lord Edward Street at 10.30pm on Saturday.
Nobody was injured in the incident but some damage was caused to the front door and windows of the property.
Detectives at Roxboro Garda station were last night trying to establish a motive for the attack, which is not thought to be gang-related.
A man arrested shortly after the incident was being held at Roxboro Garda station last night under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, which means he can be held for up to 72 hours.
Armed raid on jewellery shop
Gardaí in Co Limerick have renewed their appeal for information after a gang of four armed and masked men robbed a jewellery store in Newcastle West in broad daylight on Saturday.
Searches are continuing for the men who stole jewellery and cash from Cowper’s Jewellers on Bridge Street.
Four masked men armed with hatchets and a gun entered the jewellers at about 2.45pm. They made their getaway in a white refrigerated van, but on Maiden Street they set the van alight before continuing their getaway in a grey Saab 95 estate that was later found burnt out in Coolagown, Ballyagran.
Motorcyclists airlifted to hospital
Two motorcyclists who sustained serious injuries in a road incident on the Leitrim-Roscommon border had to be airlifted to hospital yesterday by the Irish Coast Guard’s Sligo-based rescue helicopter.
The incident occurred on a mountainous route at about 4pm and the ambulance service requested the helicopter’s assistance. The helicopter was diverted from training and was on the scene at 4.27pm.
