Mitchell proposes 'co-op cemetery'
Nama-controlled land around Dublin City could be used to provide a "co-op cemetery" that would bring down funeral costs for Dublin's bereaved, MEP Gay Mitchell has proposed.
Mr Mitchell is proposing that the credit unions or a religious organisation, or similar bodies, could approach Nama to negotiate a price on the land.
He said these plots of land could in turn be purchased by members of the public who wished to be buried there.
Mr Mitchell said the idea was a "combination of opportunity and need" presenting itself in Dublin where the cost of burial stands at €6,000, which he says is, on average, about €1,000 more expensive than in other parts of the country.
