Television actor settles case involving road incident trauma
An actor who sued over post-traumatic stress allegedly suffered as a result of a road incident in which he feared he would die, has settled his High Court action.
Tony McKenna (37), who appeared in TV dramas including The Clinic, Fair Cityand Ros na Rúnand also performed in productions in the Abbey and Samuel Beckett theatres, had sued over the November 19th, 2007, incident.
The court heard Mr McKenna had to take evasive action as a result of a car being driven the wrong way towards him on the M4 motorway. He sued the driver, Paddy Keogh, Gibbonstown, Rochfordbridge, Co Westmeath. Liability was not an issue and the hearing was for assessment of damages. Yesterday, as the case was about to go into its second day, Ms Justice Mary Irvine was told the matter had been settled.
Ex-inmate sues for Spike Island injury
A man who has completed a prison sentence for manslaughter has begun a High Court action for damages over an assault on him while he was detained in Fort Mitchell prison on Spike Island, Co Cork.
Michael Sage claims he was assaulted in 2002 by two other prisoners when he understood he was under protective custody.
He has sued the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the governor of Fort Mitchell prison for alleged negligence and breach of duty.
Gardaí seek help in jewellery theft case
Gardaí at Gort are seeking public assistance in their investigation into the theft of jewellery valued at more than €100,000 from a south Galway house late last year.
The robbery took place near Kilcolgan when the residents were away.
Among the items taken between November 26th and December 4th last were a women's gold Rolex watch with diamonds worth €30,000, a diamond ring worth €30,000, a diamond bracelet (€25,000) and a diamond cross and chain set (€6,000).
Man charged with 2008 murder in Derry
A man who was arrested in London on Wednesday has appeared before the magistrate's court in Derry charged with murdering a van driver in Derry almost three years ago. Emmet Shiels was shot dead in Creggan on June 24th, 2008, after he got into a confrontation with armed and masked men.
Thaddeus McIntyre (19), originally from Cable Street, Bogside, and who is now a restaurant deputy manager in London, appeared charged with Mr Shiels's murder. He is also charged with attempting to murder another man and with possessing a firearm on the same date.
