Guatemala first lady to divorce for presidency
GUATEMALA CITY – A court official said Guatemala’s first lady is ending her eight-year marriage so she can seek to succeed her husband as president.
Guatemala’s constitution prohibits members of a president’s extended family from running for presidency.
Judiciary spokesman Edwin Escobar said divorce proceedings began between Sandra Torres de Colom and President Alvaro Colom, who cannot run for re-election.
The divorce could be final in about a month. – (AP)
Gay sexuality critics vilifed, says Vatican
GENEVA – People who criticise gay sexual relations for religious or moral reasons are increasingly being attacked and vilified for their views, a Vatican diplomat told the UN Human Rights Council yesterday.
Archbishop Silvano Tomasi said the church believed that human sexuality was a gift reserved for married heterosexual couples. But those who expressed these views were being attacked for taking positions that did not support sexual behaviour between people of the same sex, he said. – (Reuters)
