Post-election riots claim 33 lives in Nigeria
KADUNA – Post-election rioting in northern Nigeria has killed at least 33 people in major cities alone, but the overall death toll is believed to be much higher.
A Reuters correspondent saw five charred corpses lying in the Gonin Gora neighbourhood of Kaduna, where the local government said it had already collected 12 bodies. A resident said two more bodies were lying outside his house.
The Red Cross confirmed at least six dead from Monday’s riots in the city of Kano further north and eight dead in Katsina. – (Reuters)
Boy (6) hurt by gun he took to school
HOUSTON – A six-year-old boy who brought a loaded gun to his school in the US was among three youngsters slightly injured when it fired after falling from his pocket yesterday, officials said.
One bullet was fired in the cafeteria of Ross Elementary School in Houston, Texas, spraying fragments at the students. Houston Independent School District assistant police chief Robert Mock said: “They had some cuts . . . on their legs, they don’t appear to be life- threatening.” – (AP)
Law gets role as judge at Cannes
PARIS – British actor Jude Law has been chosen as one of the jurors for the 64th Cannes film festival. He will be on the feature film jury, of which Robert de Niro is president. Other members include US actor Uma Thurman, Hong Kong director Johnny To and French director Olivier Assayas.
They will be responsible for awarding prizes including the Palme d’Or at the festival, which runs from May 11th to May 22nd. – (PA)
