Dublin-born journalist Peter Lennon dies in London
DUBLIN-BORN Guardiancorrespondent Peter Lennon has died in London at the age of 81. In the 1950s Mr Lennon headed to France, where he became a junior Paris correspondent for the Guardianin the 1960s. He wrote a book entitled Foreign Correspondent: Paris in the Sixties.
He also contributed to the Guardian's film and theatre pages, and contributed to other publications, including The Irish Times. In 1967 he and French cinematographer Raoul Coutard released The Rocky Road to Dublin,a portrait of Ireland in the 1960s.
Mr Lennon is survived by his wife Eeva, his two children Samuel and Susan, and his brothers John and Tony.
Inquiry into death of motorist in North
The North’s Police Ombudsman is investigating the death of a motorist in Co Antrim on St Patrick’s Day shortly after she had been in contact with the PSNI.
Julia Kerr (32) died after her car crashed on the Frosses Road between Ballymena, Co Antrim, and Coleraine, Co Derry.
Investigators from the ombudsman’s office are looking into her arrest and her attendance at Ballymena PSNI station on Wednesday.
The ombudsman’s office said yesterday: “Following her release, she attended Ballymoney police station on the morning of Thursday 17th March, 2011, leaving the station alone around 9am driving a yellow Renault Megane... A short time later, she was involved in a road traffic collision in which she sustained fatal injuries.”
Man struck by truck on M7 yesterday in critical condition in hospital
A man was in a critical condition in hospital last night after he was struck by a truck on the M7, past exit six on the Dublin inbound lane at around 4pm. The 45-year-old man was brought to Naas General Hospital where he was being treated for serious injuries and was described as "critical". One lane of the motorway was closed for a forensic collision examination and was reopened at 8pm. Gardaí in Naas, Co Kildare, are investigating and anyone with information is asked to contact them on 045-884300.
