Two union leaders charged over theft

NOTTINGHAM– Two British union leaders have been charged with the theft of nearly £150,000 from a charity for sick and elderly miners.

Neil Greatrex and Mick Stevens are accused of taking the money from the Nottinghamshire Miners Home between 2000 and 2006. Both have pleaded not guilty. – (PA)

Man detained over suspected stadium attack

BERLIN– German police said yesterday they had detained a 25-year-old man suspected of planning a bomb attack outside a soccer stadium in the western city of Dortmund.

The Federal Crime Office (BKA) said it found and defused three suspected explosive devices near the stadium used by Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund. Police also found three explosive devices in the flat of the suspect, who was German. The BKA said an anonymous e-mail tip was sent to the German embassy in Islamabad. – (Reuters)

Over 800 tourists airlifted after rains

BANGKOK– Thailand's navy has used helicopters and an aircraft carrier to rescue more than 800 tourists stranded by heavy rains on the country's picturesque southern islands. Torrential rains for nearly a week have caused flooding and landslides that have killed at least 17 people. The Thai navy said more than 700 travellers were transported from the island of Koh Tao to to the mainland aboard an helicopter carrier. – (AP)
