Sligo firm to close with loss of 122 jobs

The Northwest suffered another major blow yesterday following the announcement that 122 Sligo-based jobs will be lost to a "low-cost location" abroad writes Marese McDonagh.

Trachtech which has been based at the Finisklin Industrial Estate in Sligo since 1984 is to close within 12 to 18 months.

Tractech manufacture and assemble traction products such as differentials, clutches and mechanical brakes for the automotive industry.

Local Fianna Fáil TD, Dr Jimmy Devins said he was dismayed by the news.

Dr Devins said he had contacted Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin and had stressed the urgent need to assist these workers in finding suitable alternative employment.

Body found in river Shannon

A postmortem was due to be carried out in Limerick yesterday on the body of a man found in the river Shannon at the weekend.

The body of the man in his early 20's was spotted by passers-by at Howley's Quay in the city centre on Saturday afternoon.

It is understood the dead man, from Co Limerick, had gone into the city for a night out with friends on Friday and was last seen when he went to buy food.

It is understood he had some marks on his head which may have given rise to concern over the exact circumstances of his death.

Sexual assault on man in Kerry

Gardaí in Tralee, Co Kerry, are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a man on Sunday night.

The assault on a local man in his 30s took place around midnight in a residential area of the town and involved two other males.

It is the fifth sexual assault in the town in recent months.

This latest assault took place down a laneway at Ballymullen less than a 10 minute walk from an attack on a young woman by a number of males in October. Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with that incident and files have been sent to the DPP.

Man dies in mobile home fire

A man in his 50s died after a fire broke out in his mobile home about three miles from the village of Gneeveguilla near the Kerry-Cork border yesterday.

The fatal fire took place at Bounard early yesterday and units from the Millstreet, Co Cork fire service and Killarney fire service were called to the blaze.

The man was identified but gardaí were waiting to contact relatives before releasing his name.

A forensic examination was taking place and the area sealed off. A number of cars were also burned at the scene.

Killorglin Arts Festival begins

The Killorglin Arts Festival begins this week in what will be the Co Kerry town's 12th year of attracting some of Ireland's leading performers and artists.

Tipperary poet and writer Michael Coady and singer-songwriter and folk musician Jimmy Crowley will kick off proceedings tonight.

Admission is €12, concessions €5. Three night tickets are available for €25, concessions €10. Bookings at the Intermediate School 066 9761246.
