Man (41) dies after stabbing in Swords

Gardaí from Swords, Co Dublin, are investigating a fatal stabbing which occurred in a house at Lioscian, Mooretown, Swords, shortly after 7pm yesterday.

A 41-year-old man was taken to Beaumont Hospital following a row in a house. He died later from his injuries.

One man has been arrested and is detained at Swords Garda station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. The victim was from eastern Europe, as is the man being questioned.

Garda acquitted on assault charge

A Garda accused of assaulting a man he had arrested for drink-driving was yesterday acquitted by a jury which took just 40 minutes to find him not guilty of the charge.

Garda Jason Wallace, with an address c/o Kinsale Garda station in west Cork, had denied the charge of assault causing harm to Roy O'Donoghue in Clonakilty on September 6th, 2004.

Minister to start Spencer Dock talks

The Minister for Tourism, John O'Donoghue, is expected to announce today that he is to open negotiations with a consortium involving Treasury Holdings and CIÉ to build the long-awaited national conference centre at Dublin's Spencer Dock.

The Treasury/CIÉ alliance - known as the Spencer Dock Consortium - is expected to be named as the "provisional preferred tenderer" to build the project, ahead of the only other remaining competitor, the Anna Livia group.

McAleese home from hospital

President Mary McAleese has returned to Áras an Úachtaráin after being discharged from the Mater Private Hospital yesterday morning. Mrs McAleese was admitted to hospital on Sunday night and was treated for an infection. Her engagements for yesterday and today were rescheduled.

Two men killed in road accidents

Gardaí in Meath and Cavan were yesterday investigating two separate crashes in which a teenager and an 80-year-old man died. The 18-year-old was fatally injured when the car he was driving collided with a tree at Drumgreen, Shercock, Co Cavan, yesterday morning.

In Navan there was a collision between a lorry and a car on the N2 road at Balrath Cross shortly before noon. The 80-year-old driver of the car was killed.

51-year-old dies in Cork house fire

A 51-year-man died in a house fire outside Cork city in the early hours of yesterday morning. Maurice Keating, Upper Leemount, Kerry Pike, died when fire broke out at his home near the centre of the village some time after 12.30am.

Paisley honoured at Westminster

DUP leader Ian Paisley swore his Privy Council oath before Queen Elizabeth last night, so becoming "the Rt Hon Member" for North Antrim 35 years after entering the Westminster parliament. DUP MPs last night hosted a dinner for Dr and Mrs Paisley.

$8m US economic funding for Ireland

The US administration has allocated almost $8 million (€6.8 million) to the International Fund for Ireland to fund economic and social schemes next year, it was confirmed yesterday.
