Kildare youth dies as car hits bridge wall

The youth who died when the car he was driving struck a bridge wall at Kilcock, Co Kildare, early yesterday was last night named as Brian Staunton (17), Dollanstown, Co Kildare.

He was on his own in the car at the time of the accident which happened at about 5am. He was taken by ambulance to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, Dublin, where he was later pronounced dead.

Man dies in fall from roof

A father of six was killed on Saturday when he fell from a two-storey house while fixing a TV aerial.

Stephen Leonard (56), Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, was rushed to Mayo General Hospital when he was found unconscious on the ground at a house near his home where he had been making adjustments to an aerial.

Two men hurt in Belfast shootings

Two men were taken to hospital yesterday after being injured in shootings in Belfast. In the first incident, a 33-year-old man was taken to hospital after being shot in the leg off Lord Street in east Belfast, in what police described as a paramilitary- style attack. In Newtownards, Co Down, shortly after midnight, a man was taken to hospital following a gun attack. Police said he was in a stable condition. - (PA)

Two charged over drugs seizure

Two men have been charged at a special court sitting following a major heroin seizure in Limerick. Gardaí seized 2½kg of the drug, with an estimated street value of €500,000, in the city last Thursday night.

Mohammad Kargbo (33) from Sierra Leone, with an address at Ann Street, Limerick, and Emmanuel Ashibogwu (25) from Nigeria, with an address at Clyde House, Limerick, were charged with possession of the drugs for sale or supply on August 18th. Judge Leo Malone remanded both in custody to appear again before Limerick District Court next Wednesday.

McCreevy jnr not to seek Kildare seat

Fianna Fail's Áine Brady is set to become the party's front-runner in Kildare North in the next general election campaign after Charlie McCreevy jnr announced that he would not seek a nomination.

Meanwhile, Progressive Democrats senator Tom Morrissey is to stand in Dublin North at the next general election.

Galway school bus protests

Up to 300 parents and second-level students who will be left without school transport in September attended a protest in Galway city on Saturday.

At least 500 second-level pupils in the north, east and south areas of Co Galway will be stranded without transport at the start of the new school year.

Tipp woman wins taste awards

An Irish woman has won awards at the International Great Taste Awards in London. Veronica Molloy, Ballycahill, Co Tipperary, won two silver medals for her Irish whiskey marmalade and rhubarb and ginger jam, and a bronze for her solid set Kenya wild honey.
