The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) is to request the intervention of the National Implementation Body (NIB) in the Brinks Allied dispute.

The row has disrupted cash deliveries to ATMs in Dublin and elsewhere on the east coast.

The dispute concerns the introduction of security procedures, which workers claim would leave them more vulnerable to attack during armed robberies.

Talks between their union, SIPTU, and Brinks management broke down last night after the parties had spent nearly five hours at the Labour Relations Commission.

SIPTU shop stewards from all the cash in transit companies met at Liberty Hall tonight to consider the situation.

They decided not to allow other members to carry out work normally done by Brinks employees.

They are also to seek a meeting with all the employers to review health and safety issues.

After the meeting SIPTU Security Service Branch Secretary Mr Kevin McMahon said that the NIB had been asked to intervene because Brinks was "in flagrant breach" of the Stability and Peace clauses of Sustaining Progress.

Tomorrow SIPTU members in Brinks will ballot for industrial action. Mr McMahon said he expected the vote to be strongly in favour of industrial action.

"We regret the impact any action might have on the public and we believe it is now necessary for an intervention at national level by the Government, IBEC and ICTU to ensure Brink's irresponsible attitude to national agreements does not do further damage to the partnership process," he said.
