Galway County Council has confirmed it is investigating an illegal dump on the outskirts of Galway city.
It is understood several tonnes of commercial and household rubbish were found dumped in marshland at Curraghmore, Curraghline.
The land, on the Headford Road near Lough Corrib, is protected. It is a favoured spot of bird-watchers.
In a statement, the council said it investigates all reported incidents of illegal dumping and is working with landowners and community groups to tackle the problem.
"The council operates a Waste Enforcement Programme whereby systematic roadside checkpoints are conducted, in conjunction with An Garda Siochana, to enforce the Waste Management (Collection Permit) Regulations 2001 throughout the county," the statement added.
Galway County Council issued 335 fines for illegal dumping last year.
