The Irish Farmers’ Association has called on the Government to increase its current turf-cutting compensation package.

The Government is offering compensation of €1,000 a year for 15 years to turf-cutters who will have to cease cutting on more than 50 bogs under EU environmental directives.

Padraic Divilly of the IFA said the compensation on offer must be doubled to €2,000 and should apply for a minimum of 30 years. Mr Divilly also said a disturbance payment should be offered.
