MR PATRICK Joseph Collins (49), an unemployed blocklayer of Pound Street, Ballingarry, Co Limerick, appeared at Abbeyfeale District Court yesterday charged with the unlawful killing of his wife, Ms Angela Collins (49), of Hermitage Road, Ennis, Co Clare, on Tuesday. He was remanded in custody to Adare District Court next Tuesday.

Supt Tom Gavin, Newcastle West, applied to have the charge sheet amended to delete "the killing of one Angela Collins" and substitute the "unlawful killing". This was agreed by Judge William Earley.

Sgt John Whelan, Newcastle West, gave evidence of arresting Mr Collins under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at 2.45 p.m. at Churchtown, Newcastle West on Tuesday. He detained Mr Collins and this was extended at 8.45 p.m. He was released at 12.55 p.m. and then rearrested and charged, to which he made no reply.

Mr Robert Cussen, defending, applied for legal aid. When the judge asked Mr Collins if he was working, he replied: "I am not, sir, no." It was then agreed to assign Mr Cussen to the defence.
