Hungarian prosecutors have detained a 97-year-old Hungarian man on suspicion of war crimes committed in World War Two, the Budapest prosecutor's office said today.
The office named the man by his first name and initial as Laszlo Cs., and said he had denied the accusations. It said
prosecutors would apply to have him placed under house arrest.
Nazi-hunters from the Simon Wiesenthal Center say they have provided Hungary with evidence that the Hungarian Laszlo Csatary helped to organise the deportation of around 16,000 Jews to the Auschwitz death camp from the Nazi-occupied town of Kosice in 1944.
Csatary was commander of police in the town, which was part of Hungary at the time but is now in Slovakia. Prosecutors launched an investigation against him last September.
