Hundreds of music fans waited in the wind and rain on Dublin's Grafton Street yesterday to catch a glimpse of Bono during filming for U2's latest video.
The band's lead singer surprised shoppers as he walked from the entrance of Lillies Bordello to the top of the busy shopping street.
However, he had to be taken away by a car three times because of the number of fans swarming round.
The band's drummer, Larry Mullen Jnr, posed with a number of fans for photographs and signed autographs.
The video for Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, the second single from the album How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb is dedicated to the memory of Bono's late father, Bob Hewson, who died two years ago.
Speaking about his father, the singer said: "It's a portrait of him. He was a great singer, a tenor, a working class Dublin guy who listened to the opera and conducted the stereo with my mother's knitting needles.
"He just loved opera, so in the song, I hit one of those big tenor notes that he would have loved so much. I think he would have loved it, I hope so."
Earlier, Bono rang the Marian Finucanne show to praise the co-founder of Concern, Father Jack Finucane, who was the subject of an hour-long tribute.
Bono was joined by Bob Geldof and former president Ms Mary Robinson in congratulating Father Finucane on 40 years of work in the developing
world. He described Father Finucane as "the John Wayne of aid workers".
