ICTU VIGIL: Hundreds of people took part in anti-war vigils in Dublin and Belfast yesterday, organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

Silent vigils organised by ICTU and its affiliated unions also took place outside post offices in towns throughout the State between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Estimated crowds of 700 attended the vigils in both Dublin and Belfast.

At the Dublin event, 16 children of different ethnic origin, representing the 16 million children which, ICTU says, are being endangered by the war, released 250 paper doves attached to helium balloons.

There were no speeches during the vigil, which took place in bright sunshine at the Spire on O'Connell Street.

ICTU general secretary Mr David Begg said later a silent vigil had been decided upon because "we felt when people are being killed is not really the time for speeches from the backs of trucks."
