Nobel Peace Prize winner, Mr John Hume, is donating a portion of the prize money he received for winning the Mahatma Ghandi Peace Prize to the charity GOAL.
At a ceremony being held at the Europa Hotel in Belfast at 12 noon today Mr Hume will present a cheque for £10,000 sterling to GOAL founder and Chief Executive, Mr John O'Shea.
"Mr Hume has been a long time supporter of GOAL for which I am deeply grateful," said Mr O' Shea. "I would like to thank him and extend to him my best wishes."
The awarding of the Ghandi prize, which includes a monetary prize of $271,000, donated by the Indian Government, means that Mr Hume is the first person to receive all three of the major peace prizes; Nobel, Ghandi and the Martin Luther King Award.
Mr O'Shea and the former SDLP politician have been friends for fifteen years, according to a spokeswoman for GOAL.
"Mr Hume has been a good supporter of GOAL for the past ten years," she said. "He attends events whenever he can. We're very thankful. Mr Hume is an extraordinary person."
The money donated by Mr Hume will be used to help fund GOAL's emergency aid programme in Malawi.
