Gardaí in Cork are to prepare a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions after yesterday releasing without charge a HSE employee arrested for questioning about the alleged fraud of more than €100,000 from a hospital in the city over a number of years.

The man, who is in his late 40s, was arrested early yesterday morning in the Blackrock area of Cork’s southside for questioning about the theft from St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital in Gurranabraher on Cork’s northside.

He was detained for more than seven hours before being released without charge shortly after 4pm. A file will now be prepared for the DPP.

The investigation by gardaí, under Supt Con Cadogan of Gurranabraher, followed a complaint by the HSE South, which is assisting gardaí with their inquiries by making financial records available to detectives experienced in investigating fraud.
