Supermarkets in Ireland and Britain have complied with EU regulations on labelling, but only one, Iceland, has adopted an anti-GM food policy.
Iceland: removed all own-brand products containing GM ingredients from stores in 1998; supports five-year moratorium on GM crops.
Tesco: applies tighter labelling regime than required by law; declares all GM ingredients.
Superquinn: labels all GM ingredients as recommended by IBEC; only 12 of its own-brand products contain GM material; consumer booklet.
SuperValu/Centra: conforms to EU and Irish requirements and follows IBEC guidelines; information leaflets.
Marks and Spencer: labels all its products containing GM ingredients; says it working to minimise the use of the ingredients in its products.
Dunnes Stores: conforming to EU and Irish regulations; in contact with suppliers to update labelling.
Safeway: provides labelling of branded products containing GM ingredients; labelling any Safeway product that contains ingredients derived from GM source.
Sainsburys: labels between 40 and 50 own-brand products containing GM protein or DNA; extending its policy to identify where GM derivatives are used.
