Singer Whitney Houston, who was found dead in her hotel room on the eve of the Grammy Awards last month, accidentally drowned in a bathtub, the Los Angeles County coroner said.

Cocaine and heart disease also played a role in her death, the coroner said.

Houston (48) was found submerged in a bathtub in her suite at the Beverly Hilton hotel February 11th and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner's announcement ends a month of speculation over the cause of Houston's sudden death.

She had battled drug and alcohol abuse for years, leading many people to suspect that drug use had led to her death.

The autopsy revealed that a host of prescription and illegal drugs were in her system when she died - cocaine and marijuana; Xanax, which is usually prescribed for anxiety; Flexeril, a muscle relaxant; and Benadryl, an over-the-counter antihistamine.

The cocaine contributed to her death, according to the coroner's announcement, which did not provide further details. Atherosclerotic heart disease was also listed as a contributing factor.

No trauma or foul play is suspected, and the full coroner's report is expected to be released in the next few weeks.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Houston was one of the most successful pop singers in the world, selling millions of albums and starring in movies.

But her struggles with drugs and her tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, which ended in divorce in 2007, had derailed her career.

Still, she remained a towering figure in the music industry. At the Grammy Awards the night after her death, rapper LL Cool J opened the show with a prayer in her honour, and Jennifer Hudson sang "I Will Always Love You," a Dolly Parton song that was Houston's biggest hit, in tribute.

In the following weeks, her album sales soared, and millions watched her funeral on television.
