The number of houses completed in 2005 reached a new record of 80,957 units - an increase of 5.2 per cent on the previous all-time high set in 2004.
Figures on house completions published by the Department of the Environment today show that the rate of activity at 18,019 units in Dublin has doubled in the past decade.
In the greater Dublin area, 27,830 units were completed in 2005, an increase of 124 per cent on 1995.
Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal Noel Ahern described the level of activity, which is producing houses at a rate of 20 per 1,000 residents, as "phenomenal".
"It also indicates that the strong demand for housing is being met by a strong supply," he added.
The Minister indicated he expected considerable growth in the output of affordable housing through the various affordable housing schemes, with in excess of 12,000 homes expected for delivery through these schemes in the period 2005-2007.
