A controversial plan to build a £6 million hotel facing Salthill promenade is set to get planning permission from Galway Corporation after substantial amendments to the design.

The hotel, strongly opposed by local residents' groups and some city councillors, will be lowered from five to four storeys, while a new entrance from the promenade has been incorporated into the plans.

A decision is due on the application by Inland Properties Ltd owner of the Hodson Bay Hotel, near Athlone, Co Westmeath for the 150 bedroom, four star hotel within three weeks.

The city manager, Mr Joe Gavin, said yesterday it was likely that planning officials would be vying the amended application on the basis that it would not be a eyesore or take away from other buildings in the area.
