A YOUNG prisoner has died following an incident in St Patrick's Institution for young offenders last night.
Shortly after 10 p.m. last evening a Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance was called to the prison at North Circular Road, Dublin.
However, when it arrived the prisoner, a young man, had been taken by prison staff to the Mater Hospital.
A spokesperson at the hospital confirmed that a prisoner from St Patrick's had been admitted and the person admitted had died.
The spokesperson said that she could not give any more details. Earlier, a Garda spokesman said that they had no information on the death.
A spokesman at the Institution refused to confirm any of the details and said any comment would have to be made by the Department of Justice.
No Department of Justice spokesperson could be contacted.
The most recent death of a prisoner occurred on June 10th last when a 30 year old inmate of Mountjoy, David Heeney, who was a HIV positive drug addict, died shortly after being admitted to the Mater.
After that death there was a call from the Labour TD, Mr Joe Costello, for an inquiry into his death, the fourth in Mountjoy Prison this year.
Two earlier deaths, he said, were suicides and the third, a possible suicide.
